Bedroom Designs For Couples 2017

It all started with a question: Why are we so tired, even with 6 hours of sleep? Design has the ability to change the way we interact with our spaces and how they interact with us, and nowhere is this more accurate than in our bedrooms. This week, we asked our Homewings designers how they would decorate a bedroom for the perfect sleep.

1 | Come Over to the Dark Side

As fancy and complex as our brains are – they tend to work on a 'light = awake, dark = asleep' basis. As city-dwellers, we underestimate the amount of light that permeates into our bedrooms and the effect it has on our brain (to give you an idea, The Plague of Light in Our Bedrooms is the legit title of an article published on the BBC's website – this is serious stuff).

The solution: Lean into the dark side. Double up your bedroom windows by layering blinds with curtains. This will allow you to control the light in your bedroom, and it is an easy design hack to elevate your bedroom design. If you're not feeling the literal darkness of the rooms below - opt for white blinds couples with calmingly coloured curtains. We're talking light grey, dusty blue, or even white/off-white.

2 | Golden Hour at Every Hour.

Experts say that bright white lights should be banned from bedrooms altogether – be it in the form of migraine-inducing lightbulbs, or blinding tech screens. However, getting dressed in low light and banning devices from our bedrooms seem like a nuisance more than a solution. Instead, create an easy dual lighting scheme by replacing your bedside lamp's lightbulb with a warmer, gold toned one. Let it become your go-to when you want to start cooling down, leaving your brighter focus light for when you need to get the day started.

3 | Mattress Matters

We spend a third of our lives sleeping (presumably, on a bed) and yet the perfect mattress is easily overlooked. Where we sleep determines how we sleep, and not all mattresses are created equal.

Having designed over 200 bedrooms, trust us when we say that online mattress brand SIMBA is the way to go. We suggest the hybrid mattress, which was designed by surveying over 10 million people to create the perfect firmness. It's only 10 inches thick but is hides some pretty sleek sleep-tech in its core, with 5 unique layers that work together to get you to sleep-nirvana.

We like to suggest SIMBA mattresses to our clients because of their quality, but also because of their 100 night guarantee (so you can actually test your mattress, not just lay on it for 10 seconds in a showroom..). Oh, and did we mention that Homewings customers get 15% OFF SIMBA mattresses when ordering through the Homewings shopping service?

4 | This is the Sheet(s)

Welcome to the crown jewel of bedding: Bamboo sheets. They are lighter than cotton, moisture absorbing, naturally antimicrobial, and will create the perfect sleep environment. Not to mention that bamboo sheets are softer than linen, have almost temperature-adjusting qualities, and give any bedroom a luxurious and indulging feel at a very impressive price point.

Also, always start with white or neutral coloured bedding. You can play around with the duvet cover or add a throw, but nothing will induce restful sleep like fresh, soft, white bed linen. Not to mention, they will last you forever as they go with absolutely anything you decide to add to your bedroom.

5 | Plants: They're Magic.

'Bringing the outdoors in' is a major interior trend for 2017, but that's not why they made our top 8 list. Certain plants have been proven to have exceptional health benefits, and these 3 beauties will help you sleeping like a baby.

Jasmine

Studies have linked its scent of Jasmine with lower anxiety levels, and its white flowers are perfect for adding a bit of delicate beauty to your space. They are also easy to keep alive; simply place it on your windowsill and water it once a week.

Snake plant

This plant's name isn't doing it any favours, but it is truly a piece of natural magic. The Snake plant works as mother-nature's air purifier, releasing oxygen at night and removing harmful chemicals from the air such as xylene, trichloroethylene and other chemicals we can't pronounce. It also combats and removed traces of formaldehyde from the air - a chemical commonly found in hairspray – so it's the perfect piece of bedroom greenery!

Lavender

This is the most low-maintenance of all. Keeping a little bouquet of it on your nightstand and let it dry out. Its scent will only become stronger as it tries. Zero effort for maximum zen – just the way we like it! Fun fact: The scent of lavender is processed by our brains in the same way as darkness or binaural sounds. It indicates to the brain that it's relaxation time.

6 | Knock on Wood

In Keeping with the spirit of the all-natural, wood is an essential component of a sleep optimised bedroom. It is one of the 5 elements of Feng Shui and will create a sense of spa-like serenity.

It is also an easy element to incorporate in any bedroom, with a wooden bedside table, or headboard. If you're just looking to accessorise, look into adding some wood shelves above your dresser, or a rustic wooden ladder shelf.

7 | The Colour Code

The rules to a snooze-inducing colour scheme are quite simple: go dark, go light, but don't go too bright. Stimulating colours like red or bright orange have been proven to increase brain activity and can be detrimental to a good night sleep. Instead opt for smooth colours with calming qualities. We're talking dusty tones, and warm darker shades.

Light and neutral colours are great if you are looking to paint the entire space, as are comforting taupes. These are perfect cocoon-ing colours and will create the warm, calming effect we're looking for. If you're thinking of going really dark, midnight blue and forest green work fabulously in small doses (ie. An accent wall behind your bed).

Whatever colour you chose, remember to pain a little piece of the wall first and see how it develops and transforms throughout the day. A colour that looks beautiful in sunset lighting may look completely different in the direct light of mid-day.

8 | Rug'n'Roll

A good night sleep starts the moment you walk into your bedroom, and a good morning starts the second the you place your feet on the ground. Create a sense of cocooned bliss by layering two or three thin rugs throughout your bedroom. Top tip: place a shaggy faux fur or sheepskin rug wherever you first touch the floor in the morning to start you off in a good mood no matter when you wake up!
